Cold Weather Equipment Tips

5 Cold Weather Tips

With the harsh temperatures winter in Saskatchewan throws at us, we thought now would be the perfect time to share some cold weather operating tips for your equipment. No matter which Young’s Equipment location you live closest to, you’re blessed with cold and snowy weather that is hard on your machines. The following five tips will help keep your machines running at top performance when the mercury retreats into that little bulb at the bottom of the thermometer.

  • Allow time for machines to warm up – Cold weather is hard on everything, including your equipment. Hoses, wires, hydraulics and more can become stressed or even brittle. Be sure to allow enough time for your machines to come up to operating temperature before heavy operation. Batteries need to be kept fully charged and warm. If possible, keep equipment inside; otherwise, park it in an area that is protected from the harsh winter wind.
  • Maintenance checks are vital – Regular maintenance helps you minimize your machine’s downtime and increases your operator’s safety. If anything, these checks are more important in the cold weather, even as human nature makes them more likely to be skipped. Consider taking advantage of Young’s Equipment Winter Inspection and Maintenance programs.
  • Switch to synthetic hydraulic/transmission oil – With CaseIH Hy-Tran you’re already using the finest hydraulic fluid on the market that enhances your equipment’s brake and clutch capabilities while helping reduce final drive wear, clutch slippage and brake chatter. Hy-Tran Ultraction is designed to work in an ambient temperature range of -30C to +50C. Consider switching to Hy-Tran SSL once the cold hits, this synthetic blend oil provides all the advantages of Hy-Tran you already value, plus it is designed to work optimally all the way down to -40C. Hy-Tran SSL is an all-season oil that does not need to be drained for operation in warm or hot temperatures.

  • Prepare for snow operation – First, make sure machine operators are properly dressed for the cold, even if the machine has a cab or some protection from the elements. They should avoid loose clothing that can catch on controls – a very real hazard. Operators should also be properly trained for snow and icy conditions. This can help prevent errors like excessive down pressure, which can cause damage and is hazardous to the operator and others. Flashing lights, warning sirens and other features should all be in operating order to improve visibility. Defrosters should be checked to keep windows and doors clear so the driver’s visibility is not impaired.
  • Rest – Schedule breaks for yourself and your team, as the cold weather can drain energy. Tired drivers are extremely dangerous, so ensure everyone is well-rested and capable of full concentration.

In case you have further questions about winter operation, the Winter Inspections program or Hy-Tran SSL, the Parts and Service staff in all our locations will be happy to answer them for you. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Grain Bags

2019 Saskatchewan Grain Bag Recycling Rate Already Surpasses 2018 by 25%

MOOSE JAW, SK – Halfway through 2019, and with one of the busiest periods of grain bag recycling still ahead, Saskatchewan farmers have already recycled 25% more grain bags in 2019 than they did in all of 2018, recycling program operator Cleanfarms announced today.

Cleanfarms is a non-profit industry stewardship organization established 10 years ago to help Canadian farmers recycle or properly dispose of waste agricultural plastic and other waste materials generated on farms. So far this year, Saskatchewan farmers have turned in almost 1,580 tonnes of used, empty grain bags for recycling. During the whole of 2018, the first year of the government-regulated program, the total collected for recycling was 1,265 tonnes.

“With 2019 only at the mid-way point and with a full harvest season ahead of us, we are expecting that we’ll see the year end with a very successful recycling program for grain bags in Saskatchewan,” predicted Cleanfarms’ general manager Barry Friesen. “We have Saskatchewan farmers to thank for that. We are very grateful they are getting on board so enthusiastically with this recycling program.”

Career Event In Ireland

“We first went there [Ireland] in 2008 following the massive market and real estate crash in the U.S. and around the world,” says Bazin. “Thousands lined up at job fairs and paid money just to get in the door.” Above is just one example of the long lines people stood in to get into job fairs in Ireland.

Growing the Workforce: The Processes & Challenges of Hiring International Ag Technicians

Brent Bazin, corporate service manager at Young’s Equipment, shared the dealership’s history with international recruitment and why they see it as a valuable option when looking for new employees.

A talented technician cannot be found overnight. When there are not enough near your dealership looking for work, you need to come up with a new strategy to bring in a good technician. Within the few last year, Young’s Equipment has hired a number employees from overseas as part of the international hiring strategy they started over a decade ago.

Ag Equipment Technician Training

Ag Equipment Technician Training Being Geared Toward High Schoolers

The Agricultural Equipment Technician program offered through the Sun West Distance Learning Centre has opened the door for high school students to get an understanding of the ag industry and potentially get an early start on careers as technicians.

Finding a good employee and keeping them on has become an increasingly difficult task for many farm equipment dealers. A good service technician is particularly hard to find. What seems to be a consensus among many dealers is younger people do not know enough or do not even consider entering the ag industry.

“Whether they were technicians in the agriculture industry or the trucking industry or the heavy equipment industry, there is becoming a worldwide shortage of technicians,” says Brent Bazin, corporate service manager at Young’s Equipment and board member of the Agricultural Equipment Trade Board for the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC). “A technician today is not the technician we had 20 years ago. It is a lot more intense in terms of technology. Nowadays to get by in this trade you can pretty much be just as successful with anything offered at university. It becomes a matter of ‘Is this what I want to do for a career?’”
